Carrier Free

What does CF mean?

CF stands for Carrier Free (CF). We typically add Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) as a carrier protein to our recombinant proteins. Adding a carrier protein enhances protein stability, increases shelf-life, and allows the recombinant protein to be stored at a more dilute concentration. The carrier free version does not contain BSA.

What formulation is right for me?

In general, we advise purchasing the recombinant protein with BSA for use in cell or tissue culture, or as an ELISA standard. In contrast, the carrier free protein is recommended for applications, in which the presence of BSA could interfere.

Immobilized Recombinant Mouse CD8 alpha (Catalog # 9135-CD) supports the adhesion of Jurkat human acute T cell leukemia cells. The ED50 for this effect is 1-5 μg/mL.

Background: CD8

CD8, also known as Ly-2 or Leu-2, is a heterodimeric glycoprotein (alpha and beta subunits) that functions in conjunction with the T cell receptor in the recognition of MHC class I/peptide complexes (1, 2). CD8 alpha is expressed on double positive (CD4+CD8+) thymocytes and mature CD8+ cytolytic T cells (CTL) (3-5), intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) (6), some gamma-delta T cells (7), subsets of thymic and splenic dendritic cells (DC) (8), and peritoneal mast cells (9). It can form disulfide linked homodimers or heterodimers with CD8 beta (10). Thymic CD8+ DC express primarily alpha beta heterodimers, while splenic CD8+ DC primarily express alpha alpha homodimers (8). CD8 alpha + DC can present viral antigenic peptides in complex with MHC I and prime CTL responses (11). The approximately 35 kDa mature mouse CD8 alpha consists of a 169 amino acid (aa) extracellular domain (ECD) with one Ig-like domain, a 21 aa transmembrane segment, and a 30 aa cytoplasmic domain (12). Within the ECD, mouse CD8 alpha shares 49% and 64% aa sequence identity with human and rat CD8 alpha, respectively.
